1. NIV Bible 045 - Luke 1

Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word. Therefore, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, it seemed good also to me to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught. In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. 우리 가운데서 일어난 일에 대하여 차례대로 쓰려고 한 사람들이 많이 있었습니다. 이 사람들은 처음부터 이 일을 목격한 사람들, 즉 말씀의 종들이 우리에게 전하여 준 대로 기록하였습니다. 존귀하신 데오빌로 각하, 저도 이 모든 일을 처음부터 자세히 조사하였으므로, 이 일을 각하께 차례대로 기록하여 드리는 것이 좋다고 생각합니다. 이는 이미 배우신 것들이 모두 사실이라는 것을 알게 하려는 것입니다. 유대 왕 헤롯 시절에 아비야 조에 사가랴라고 하는 제사장이 한 사람 있었습니다. 그의 아내는 아론 가문의 딸로 이름은 엘리사벳이었습니다.

Both of them were upright in the sight of God, observing all the Lord's commandments and regulations blamelessly. But they had no children, because Elizabeth was barren; and they were both well along in years. Once when Zechariah's division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God, he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to go into the temple of the Lord and burn incense. And when the time for the burning of incense came, all the assembled worshipers were praying outside. 이들은 하나님 앞에서 의로운 사람이었습니다. 이들은 하나님의 모든 계명과 법도를 흠잡을 데 없을 정도로 잘 지켰습니다. 그런데 이들에게는 자식이 없었습니다. 엘리사벳은 임신할 수 없는 여자였고, 두 사람 모두 너무 나이가 많았습니다. 사가랴가 자기 조의 차례가 되어서 하나님 앞에서 제사장으로 일하고 있을 때, 제사장 임무를 맡는 관례를 따라 제비를 뽑았습니다. 사가랴가 주님의 성전에 들어가 향을 피우는 사람으로 뽑혔습니다. 분향 시간에 다른 사람들은 밖에서 기도를 하고 있었습니다.

Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense. When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear. But the angel said to him: "Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to give him the name John. He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth, for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from birth. 그 때, 주님의 천사가 사가랴 앞에 나타나 분향하는 제단 오른쪽에 섰습니다. 사가랴는 천사를 보고 매우 놀라서 두려움에 휩싸였습니다. 천사가 그에게 말했습니다. “사가랴야, 두려워하지 마라. 네 기도를 하나님께서 들으셨다. 네 아내 엘리사벳이 아들을 가지게 될 것이다. 그의 이름을 요한이라고 하여라. 그 아들은 네게 기쁨과 즐거움이 될 것이다. 또한 많은 사람들이 그가 태어남을 즐거워할 것이다. 그 아들은 하나님 앞에서 큰 인물이 될 것이다. 그는 포도주와 술을 마시지 않으며, 어머니 뱃속에 있을 때부터 성령으로 충만해질 것이다.

Many of the people of Israel will he bring back to the Lord their God. And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous--to make ready a people prepared for the Lord." Zechariah asked the angel, "How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years." The angel answered, "I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news. And now you will be silent and not able to speak until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their proper time." 그는 이스라엘 자손들 중에서 많은 사람들을 주 하나님께로 돌아오게 할 것이다. 그는 엘리야의 심령과 능력을 가지고 주님보다 먼저 올 것이다. 그래서 아버지의 마음을 자녀에게로 향하게 하며, 순종하지 않는 사람들을 의인의 지혜로 돌아서게 할 것이다. 그래서 사람들에게 주님을 맞을 준비를 하게 할 것이다.” 사가랴가 천사에게 말하였습니다. “이 일이 일어날지 제가 어떻게 알겠습니까? 저는 늙었고, 제 아내 또한 늙었습니다.” 천사가 사가랴에게 대답하였습니다. “나는 하나님 앞에서 섬기고 있는 가브리엘이다. 하나님께서 이 기쁜 소식을 전하라고 나를 너에게 보내셨다. 들어라. 때가 되면 이루어질 내 말을 네가 믿지 않았으므로, 이 일이 이루어질 때까지 너는 말을 하지 못하게 될 것이다.”

Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he stayed so long in the temple. When he came out, he could not speak to them. They realized he had seen a vision in the temple, for he kept making signs to them but remained unable to speak. When his time of service was completed, he returned home. After this his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and for five months remained in seclusion. "The Lord has done this for me," she said. "In these days he has shown his favor and taken away my disgrace among the people." 사람들이 밖에서 사가랴를 기다리고 있었습니다. 사람들은 그가 성전에서 늦어지는 것을 이상하게 생각하였습니다. 사가랴가 밖으로 나왔는데 아무 말도 할 수 없었습니다. 사람들은 그가 성전 안에서 환상을 본 줄 알게 되었습니다. 사가랴는 단지 손짓만 할 뿐, 말을 하지 못했습니다. 제사장 직무 기간이 끝난 뒤에 사가랴는 집으로 돌아갔습니다. 그후에 엘리사벳이 임신하게 되었습니다. 그녀는 임신한 후 다섯 달 동안, 집 밖에 나오지 않았습니다. 그녀가 말했습니다. “주님께서 나를 너그러이 돌보아 주셔서 아이를 주심으로 사람들로부터 당하는 내 부끄러움을 없애 주셨다.”

In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin's name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, "Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you." Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. 임신한 후 여섯째 달에, 하나님께서 가브리엘 천사를 나사렛이라고 하는 갈릴리의 한 마을로 보내셨습니다. 가브리엘은 다윗 가문의 요셉이라고 하는 사람과 약혼한 처녀에게 가게 되었습니다. 이 처녀의 이름은 마리아였습니다. 천사가 마리아에게 와서 말했습니다. “은혜를 입은 여인이여! 기뻐하여라. 주께서 당신과 함께하길 빈다.” 마리아는 천사의 말을 듣고 너무나 놀라서 ‘이게 도대체 무슨 소리인가’ 하고 생각하였습니다. 천사가 마리아에게 말했습니다. “마리아야, 두려워하지 마라. 하나님께서 네게 은혜를 베푸신다.

You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end." "How will this be," Mary asked the angel, "since I am a virgin?" The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. 보아라! 네가 아이를 임신하게 되어 아들을 낳을 것이다. 너는 그 이름을 예수라고 하여라. 그는 크게 되어 가장 높으신 분의 아들이라고 불릴 것이다. 주 하나님께서 그에게 그의 조상 다윗의 왕좌를 주실 것이다. 그는 영원히 야곱의 집을 다스릴 것이며, 그의 나라는 끝이 없을 것이다.” 마리아가 천사에게 말했습니다. “나는 남자를 알지 못하는 처녀인데 어떻게 이런 일이 있을 수 있습니까?” 천사가 마리아에게 대답했습니다. “성령이 네게 내려오시고 가장 높으신 분의 능력이 너를 감싸 주실 것이다. 태어날 아이는 거룩한 분, 하나님의 아들이라고 불릴 것이다.

Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be barren is in her sixth month. For nothing is impossible with God." "I am the Lord's servant," Mary answered. "May it be to me as you have said." Then the angel left her. At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, where she entered Zechariah's home and greeted Elizabeth. 보아라! 네 친척 엘리사벳도 나이가 많지만 임신하였다. 그녀는 임신하지 못한다고 생각하였으나 벌써 임신한 지 여섯 달이 되었다. 하나님께서는 하지 못하실 일이 없다.” 마리아가 말했습니다. “보소서. 저는 주님의 여종이오니 당신의 말씀대로 제게 이루어질 것을 믿겠습니다.” 그러자 천사가 마리아에게서 떠나갔습니다. 그 무렵에 마리아가 일어나 유대 지방 산골에 있는 동네로 서둘러 갔습니다. 사가랴의 집으로 들어가서 엘리사벳에게 인사하였습니다.

When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed: "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who has believed that what the Lord has said to her will be accomplished!" 엘리사벳이 마리아의 인사를 받을 때, 아기가 뱃속에서 뛰놀았습니다. 엘리사벳이 성령으로 충만하여져서 큰 소리로 외쳤습니다. “당신은 여인들 중에서 가장 복받은 자입니다. 당신의 뱃속에 있는 열매가 복됩니다. 내 주님의 어머니께서 내게 오시다니 무슨 일입니까? 보소서. 당신이 인사하는 소리가 내 귀에 들릴 때에 내 뱃속의 아이가 기뻐서 뛰어 놀았습니다. 주님께서 말씀하신 것이 이루어질 것을 믿은 자는 복이 있습니다.”

And Mary said: "My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me-- holy is his name. His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. 마리아가 말하였습니다. “내 영혼이 주님을 찬양합니다. 내 영혼이 나의 구주 하나님을 기뻐합니다. 그것은 주님께서 이 여종의 비천함을 돌보셨기 때문입니다. 이제부터는 모든 세대가 나를 복되다 할 것입니다. 그것은 전능하신 분이 내게 이 큰 일을 행하셨기 때문입니다. 주님의 이름은 거룩합니다. 주님의 자비하심은 하나님을 두려워하는 자에게 대대로 있을 것입니다.

He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful to Abraham and his descendants forever, even as he said to our fathers." 주님은 강한 팔로 권능을 행하시고 마음이 교만한 자를 흩으셨습니다. 하나님은 왕들을 왕좌로부터 끌어내리시고 낮고 천한 사람들을 높이셨습니다. 굶주린 사람들을 좋은 것으로 채우시고 부자를 빈손으로 돌려 보내셨습니다. 주님은 자비를 기억하시며 주님의 종 이스라엘을 도우셨습니다. 우리 조상들에게 말씀하신 대로 아브라함과 그 자손들을 영원히 도우실 것입니다.”

Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home. When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to a son. Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and they shared her joy. On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to name him after his father Zechariah, but his mother spoke up and said, "No! He is to be called John." 마리아는 엘리사벳과 함께 석 달쯤 있다가 집으로 돌아갔습니다. 해산할 날이 이르러 엘리사벳은 아들을 낳았습니다. 이웃 사람들과 친척들은 주께서 엘리사벳에게 큰 은혜를 베푸신 것을 듣고 함께 기뻐하였습니다. 이 사람들은 아이가 태어난 지 팔 일째 되는 날에, 아이에게 할례를 하려고 왔습니다. 이들은 아버지의 이름을 따서 아이의 이름을 사가랴라고 지으려고 하였습니다. 그러자 아기 어머니가 말했습니다. “안 됩니다! 요한이라고 지어야 합니다.”

They said to her, "There is no one among your relatives who has that name." Then they made signs to his father, to find out what he would like to name the child. He asked for a writing tablet, and to everyone's astonishment he wrote, "His name is John." Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue was loosed, and he began to speak, praising God. The neighbors were all filled with awe, and throughout the hill country of Judea people were talking about all these things. 사람들이 엘리사벳에게 말했습니다. “하지만 당신 가문 중에 그런 이름을 가진 사람은 하나도 없어요.” 사람들은 아버지인 사가랴에게 손짓을 하여 아이의 이름을 무엇이라고 짓기 원하는지 물었습니다. 그러자 사가랴는 쓸 것을 달라고 하여 ‘아기 이름은 요한’이라고 썼습니다. 이를 본 사람들이 모두 이상히 여겼습니다. 그 즉시 사가랴의 입이 열리고 혀가 풀려 하나님을 찬양하였습니다. 주변에 있는 사람들이 모두 두려워하였고, 이 모든 이야기는 유대 온 산골에 전해졌습니다.

Everyone who heard this wondered about it, asking, "What then is this child going to be?" For the Lord's hand was with him. His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied: "Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has come and has redeemed his people. He has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David (as he said through his holy prophets of long ago), 이 이야기를 들은 사람은 모두 이 사실을 마음에 새기며 “이 아이가 장차 어떤 인물이 될까?” 하고 말했습니다. 그것은 주님의 손이 아이와 함께하셨기 때문입니다. 요한의 아버지 사가랴가 성령으로 충만하여 예언하였습니다. “주 이스라엘의 하나님은 찬양을 받으실 분이시다. 주께서 백성들을 돌보시며 구원을 베푸셨다. 하나님의 종 다윗의 집에서 우리를 위한 구원의 뿔을 드셨다. 옛날 거룩한 예언자의 입으로 말씀하셨다.

salvation from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us-- to show mercy to our fathers and to remember his holy covenant, the oath he swore to our father Abraham: to rescue us from the hand of our enemies, and to enable us to serve him without fear in holiness and righteousness before him all our days. 우리를 원수에게서 구원하시고, 우리를 미워하는 모든 사람의 손에서 건져 내셨다. 주님께서 우리 조상에게 자비를 베푸시고 거룩한 언약을 기억하셨다. 이것은 우리에게 주시려고 우리 조상 아브라함에게 하신 맹세다. 우리를 원수들의 손에서 구원하셔서 두려움 없이 주님을 섬기게 하셨고 평생 동안 주님 앞에서 거룩하고 의롭게 살아가게 하셨다.

And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him, to give his people the knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins, because of the tender mercy of our God, by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the path of peace." And the child grew and became strong in spirit; and he lived in the desert until he appeared publicly to Israel. 아기야, 너는 가장 높으신 분의 예언자로 불릴 것이다. 네가 주님보다 앞서 가며 주님의 길을 준비할 것이다. 백성들에게 죄를 용서받는 구원의 지식을 줄 것이다. 우리 하나님의 사랑과 자비로 인하여 떠오른 태양이 높은 곳에서 어두움과 죽음의 그늘에 앉은 우리들에게 빛을 비추일 것이다. 그래서 우리의 발을 평화의 길로 인도하실 것이다.” 아기는 자라서 심령이 강해졌습니다. 요한은 이스라엘 백성 앞에 나타나는 날까지 광야에서 살았습니다.
